Former National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration staff have created Climate.us, a website that restores access to climate information previously available on a government site. The new platform launched this week to fill the gap left when Climate.gov was shut down last year.
The site was built by ex-NOAA employees laid off during Department of Government Efficiency cutbacks. Rebecca Lindsey, who led the original Climate.gov project, heads the effort with two colleagues. They began work in August 2025 after crowdsourcing about $280,000 and recruiting 80 volunteer scientists.
Climate.us recreates key features from the old site, including a climate dashboard, news archives, maps and educational materials. Lindsey said the focus remains strictly on presenting data without policy recommendations. An anonymous donor provided a grant to sustain operations until at least February 2027.
Climate scientists Katharine Hayhoe and Gretchen Gehrke welcomed the launch. They noted that the original site reached nearly one million users monthly and served as a trusted public resource for understanding climate trends.
