Galatasaray fans celebrate championship with festivities in Berlin

Fans of Turkish origin celebrated Galatasaray's Turkish league title win in Berlin on Saturday evening. Police reported several hundred participants gathering mainly along Kurfürstendamm.

Galatasaray clinched the championship title with a 4:2 win against Antalyaspor in Istanbul. The team now sits an unassailable lead ahead of city rival Fenerbahçe.

In Berlin, a few dozen fans first gathered at Breitscheidplatz. Within an hour the crowd grew to several hundred. Many drove cars and motorcycles adorned with club flags.

Police described a low four-digit number of celebrants. Fans set off fireworks, but no riots occurred. Officers kept pepper spray ready yet did not deploy it.

Similar festivities last year led to serious clashes. At that time 33 officers were injured and 34 fans were detained.
