Government temporarily halves monthly ticket prices

The Tidö parties announced on Tuesday that the price of monthly public transport passes will be halved from July 1 until year-end. The 6.5 billion kronor measure is loan-financed in response to the energy crisis.

The announcement was made by the four party leaders at a press conference at a bus depot in Värmdö municipality. Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the measure would ease the effects of higher energy and fuel prices due to the war in Iran and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Social Democrat Mikael Damberg called the initiative desperate electioneering. He noted that the parties had previously voted against similar proposals and that the reduction ends after the election.

Ulf Kristersson dismissed the criticism as cynical. He stressed that it is a time-limited effort to protect the Swedish economy.

The reduction applies only to unlimited 30-day tickets. Regions such as Skåne and Stockholm are now preparing for increased demand, while it remains unclear how Öresund commuters will be affected.

Cosa dice la gente

Initial reactions on X discuss the halving of monthly public transport prices as a Liberal-driven reform, with some criticizing it as not addressing core issues like system failures in cities like Örebro, while others link it to economic policies such as fuel tax cuts.
