Hong Kong launches solar farm on restored landfill

Hong Kong has launched a new solar farm on restored landfill in Tseung Kwan O. The facility, developed by Veolia, Sun Hung Kai Properties and Citic Pacific, is the largest of its kind in the city.

The solar farm at the South East New Territories Landfill features about 1,850 solar panels spanning 140,000 square feet. It was completed in late 2025 and is expected to generate about 1.2 million kilowatt-hours of green electricity per year.

This output is enough to meet the needs of about 360 homes. The project will join the government’s feed-in tariff scheme, which allows participants to sell excess power to utilities at premium rates.

The farm is projected to cut carbon dioxide emissions by about 530 tonnes a year. This reduction is equivalent to the CO2 absorption of about 20,000 trees.

Supported by the Environment and Ecology Bureau and the Environmental Protection Department, the installation aims to support Hong Kong’s carbon neutrality goals.
