Following initial de-escalation efforts including a proposed mediation visit by President Prabowo, Indonesia has postponed its 2026 D-8 Summit due to the worsening Middle East conflict and confirmed it did not co-sponsor UN Security Council Resolution 2817 condemning Iran's attacks on Gulf states.
Indonesia's Foreign Ministry announced on March 13, 2026, that it did not support or co-sponsor UN Security Council Resolution 2817, proposed by Bahrain for the Gulf Cooperation Council to condemn Iran's attacks on Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. Spokesperson Nabyl A. Mulachela emphasized Indonesia's preference for peaceful, diplomatic resolutions with a balanced and inclusive approach. "The consideration is that in addressing efforts to resolve this issue, not only inclusivity in the process needs attention, but also balance," Nabyl said.
The resolution passed on March 11 with 13 votes in favor, none against, and abstentions from Russia and China. Supporters included France, the UK, US, Bahrain, Colombia, DRC, Denmark, Greece, Latvia, Liberia, Pakistan, Panama, and Somalia. It denounced attacks on civilians and maritime disruptions, demanding Iran cease threats.
Separately, Director of Multilateral Cooperation Tri Tharyat revealed the postponement of the 2026 D-8 Summit in Jakarta until further notice, citing escalation in the Middle East—including the US-Israel-Iran war. Foreign Minister Sugiono notified D-8 partners via letter, with future dates to be discussed. The move followed consultations with the D-8 Secretary-General and members, who understood the circumstances. Indonesia holds D-8 chairmanship for 2026-2027 under the theme "Navigating Global Shifts: Strengthening Equality, Solidarity, and Cooperation for Shared Prosperity." The summit was set for April 15, after preparatory meetings. D-8 members: Indonesia, Bangladesh, Egypt, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, Turkey (Azerbaijan joining Dec 2024).
This comes amid prior Indonesian initiatives for restraint and dialogue, such as Prabowo's offer to visit Tehran with Pakistan's PM. Conflict background: US and Israeli strikes on Iran (Feb 28, 2026) prompted Iranian retaliation on US assets and effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz, spiking oil prices. Indonesia calls for all parties to halt attacks and pursue peace.
