Following talks with North Korean Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui, leader Kim Jong-un met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Pyongyang on Friday, stating bilateral ties have reached a new level. The two sides pledged deeper strategic coordination and cooperation amid Wang's two-day visit, his first to North Korea since 2019.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un met Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the Workers’ Party of Korea headquarters in Pyongyang on Friday, the second day of Wang's visit that began on April 9. This came after Wang's discussions with Foreign Minister Choe Son-hui on strengthening ties.
Kim stated that relations between the two countries had reached a new level, with both sides pledging further practical cooperation.
Wang conveyed greetings from President Xi Jinping, according to China’s state news agency Xinhua. He said the meeting opened a new chapter in bilateral ties, referencing the historic summit between Xi and Kim in Beijing last September—Kim’s first visit to China in over six years.
"China is willing to work with the DPRK to implement the important consensus reached by the top leaders, deepen exchanges, promote practical cooperation and inject new meaning into the traditional friendship," Wang said.
The visit signals an accelerating thaw in China-North Korea relations, building on resumed direct rail and air links post-COVID.
