The Kochi Municipal Corporation is considering a hybrid double-decker ro-ro ferry for the Vypeen-Fort Kochi route following complaints about noise from diesel ferries. Mayor V.K. Minimol outlined plans to seek central funding and issue municipal bonds.
The proposal follows the addition of a third diesel ro-ro ferry on July 12. Residents and tourism operators have reported disturbing noise levels in the heritage area.
Mayor V.K. Minimol said the corporation aims to obtain partial funding from the Urban Challenge Fund. Municipal bonds would cover half the cost. Noise reduction work is planned for the existing ferries during upcoming dry-docking repairs estimated at ₹5 crore.
Hotelier Jose Dominic called for solar-electric or electric ferries. Sajan John of Kochi Water Metro Limited noted that electric-hybrid vessels already operate without noise or air pollution elsewhere in the city.
