Mangaung metro warns against buying fireworks from illegal traders

The Mangaung Metro Municipality in Bloemfontein has expressed concerns over residents purchasing fireworks from unauthorised sellers. Officials emphasise the need for traders to display valid permits and urge caution, especially among children. Violations of by-laws could lead to fines or imprisonment.

The Mangaung Metro Municipality has issued a warning to residents in Bloemfontein about the risks of buying fireworks from illegal traders. According to municipal by-laws, all sellers must clearly display an Explosives Traders Permit issued by the South African Police Service (SAPS) on their premises. This measure aims to ensure safety during the festive season.

MMC for Community Safety and Transport, Logan Kruger, highlighted the importance of parental supervision for children under 16 when handling fireworks. She pointed to past incidents where negligence led to severe injuries, including the loss of fingers, hands, and eyes among children.

Kruger also stressed adherence to the timings outlined in the by-laws to avoid disturbances. "Some people use them at 3 am, 4 am and that is so disrespectful," she said. "And also, because it is this time of the year, we don’t know if it is a bullet. But I am saying when you use them let us be mindful of the time and how we use it. The municipality can issue a fine or people can go to jail depending on the severity of the transgression."

These guidelines are part of broader efforts to promote responsible use of fireworks and prevent accidents during celebrations.
