Nelson Vásquez resigns as fourth Air-e interventor

Nelson Javier Vásquez has resigned from his position as interventor of the energy company Air-e, becoming the fourth to leave since the intervention began in 2024. The decision was confirmed by the superintendent of public services, Felipe Durán, on January 23, and Vásquez will remain in the role until January 29 while a replacement is appointed.

Air-e, the company operating in the departments of Atlántico, La Guajira, and Magdalena, has been under state intervention since 2024 due to a severe financial crisis. Nelson Javier Vásquez took office in June 2025, and his recent resignation marks the departure of the fourth interventor in this process. Before him, Carlos Diago, Edwin Palma, and Diana Bustamante also left the position.

The resignation was signed and confirmed on January 23 by Felipe Durán, superintendent of public services. While no new interventor is yet defined, Vásquez will continue in his duties until Thursday, January 29. This instability in the intervened leadership highlights the ongoing challenges facing the company.

In the broader context, the Ministry of Mines and Energy announced at the beginning of the month a temporary charge of 8 pesos per kilowatt-hour on energy tariffs in Colombia. This measure aims to clear a debt of 2 trillion pesos and prevent a contagion effect on other marketers. According to the ministry, XM has warned of risks in the wholesale energy market that could impact national supply if not managed properly.

As a result, tariffs will rise in regions like Huila and Arauca, while they will remain lower in areas operated by Air-e. This situation underscores the precarious financial position of the intervened company and its implications for the country's energy sector.
