NJPW's Shota Umino withdraws from G1 Climax after concussion

Shota Umino has been forced to withdraw from the G1 Climax 36 tournament after sustaining a concussion during his opening match. New Japan Pro-Wrestling announced the decision on July 15 following medical evaluation.

Umino suffered the injury on July 11 during his first-round match against Zack Sabre Jr. at the NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. He showed concussion-like symptoms during the bout, which Sabre Jr. won by pinfall.

NJPW medical staff determined that Umino could not continue. All of his remaining matches have been declared forfeits, with his opponents each receiving two points by default.

The company issued an official statement apologizing to fans who purchased tickets expecting to see Umino and wishing him a full recovery. Umino becomes the third wrestler in three years to withdraw from the G1 Climax due to injury.
