Phillies pitcher Daniel Robert recovers after cardiac event in spring training

Philadelphia Phillies right-hander Daniel Robert is out of the hospital and feeling okay after a cardiac event at BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater, Florida. The 31-year-old collapsed on the pitcher's mound following his first bullpen session of the spring.

On Sunday morning, Daniel Robert collapsed next to the half-field at BayCare Ballpark after completing his first bullpen session since October. This followed a previous cardiac event during a bullpen session at Carpenter Complex last October. Over the winter, Robert had an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) placed near his chest, which triggered as he walked off the mound during the recent incident. He walked to the ambulance under his own power before being taken to the hospital and later released. Phillies manager Rob Thomson witnessed the event firsthand. “I was standing right behind him,” Thomson said. “It was scary because he went down, he started to get back up again and he went back down.” About 15 teammates had gathered to watch Robert's milestone session and applauded beforehand. “It was very scary, but he’s fine,” Thomson added. Robert posted a 4.15 ERA in 15 appearances for the Phillies last season.
