Police launch manhunt after suspected Al-Shabaab attack kills chief and teacher in Garissa

A chief and a primary school teacher were killed in a suspected Al-Shabaab ambush in Hulugho, Garissa County, on the night of January 25, 2026. The National Police Service has deployed a multi-agency security team to track down the perpetrators. Local leaders have condemned the violence and extended condolences to the families.

On the night of January 25, 2026, Chief Abdi Gani Owl and a primary school teacher were ambushed and killed in their homes in the Hulugho area of Garissa County by suspected Al-Shabaab militants. The attack has heightened security concerns in this border region. Reports indicate the assailants targeted the victims under unclear circumstances.

The National Police Service (NPS) has launched a manhunt for the perpetrators. Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has ordered the deployment of a multi-agency security team to the area to track them down and bring them to justice. NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated that the agencies have been directed to intensify security patrols in the region and surrounding areas.

In its statement, the NPS said: "A multi-agency security team is actively pursuing the perpetrators of this cowardly act. The area has been secured, and an operation is ongoing to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face the full force of the law."

The statement added: "We understand the anxiety and concern such incidents cause residents and all Kenyans. We strongly wish to reassure the public, particularly in Hulugho, Garissa County, that their safety and security remain our utmost priority."

The NPS has urged anyone with additional information to visit the nearest police station or contact security agencies via toll-free numbers: 999, 911, or 112. Information can also be channeled to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) through 0800722203 or WhatsApp 0709570000.

Garissa MP Edo Udgoon Siyad expressed profound grief over the deaths, describing them as a deep loss to the families and the broader Garissa community. "I send my condolences to the families of Chief Abdi Gani Owl and the dedicated teacher, both of whom served the Hulugho community with unwavering commitment," Siyad said.

"We condemn this senseless violence and stand united in support of all affected. May Chief Gani rest in Jannatul Firdaus, and may the teacher’s family find strength and peace," she added.

Such incidents recall recent Al-Shabaab activities in the border area, including an IED attack on November 19 and the killing of militants on November 30. The NPS has reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the lives and property of all Kenyans.
