On the night of January 25, 2026, Chief Abdi Gani Owl and a primary school teacher were ambushed and killed in their homes in the Hulugho area of Garissa County by suspected Al-Shabaab militants. NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga stated that the agencies have been directed to intensify security patrols in the region and surrounding areas.
In its statement, the NPS said: "A multi-agency security team is actively pursuing the perpetrators of this cowardly act. The area has been secured, and an operation is ongoing to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face the full force of the law."
The statement added: "We understand the anxiety and concern such incidents cause residents and all Kenyans. We strongly wish to reassure the public, particularly in Hulugho, Garissa County, that their safety and security remain our utmost priority."
The NPS has urged anyone with additional information to visit the nearest police station or contact security agencies via toll-free numbers: 999, 911, or 112. Information can also be channeled to the Directorate of Criminal Investigation (DCI) through 0800722203 or WhatsApp 0709570000.
