Prosecutor drops investigation into Uppsala hospital poisonings; suspect cleared

Prosecutor Emma Häggström has closed the probe into the suspected poisoning of four employees at Akademiska sjukhuset in Uppsala last autumn, clearing a previously detained colleague of suspicion. The hospital regrets the outcome but respects the decision.

In late October 2025, four employees on a ward at Uppsala's Akademiska sjukhuset fell ill within nine days, exhibiting symptoms like hot flushes, shaking, high blood pressure, elevated heart rates, and critically low potassium levels—likely from a substance added to their drinks, such as a common hospital medication.

Police opened a preliminary investigation into poisoning, detaining a female colleague on suspicion of gross assault in early December. She denied involvement and was released after a week. Earlier theories included caffeine powder, but analyses were ongoing.

After extensive interviews, forensics, and expert input, Häggström concluded in April 2026: "I have no more proof than at the time of detention. It cannot be proven that the suspect committed the crime." The woman, who was dismissed from the hospital in February, cried with relief, her lawyer Stefan Wallin said.

Akademiska sjukhuset's security chief Viktor Ekström noted they learned via press release: "We had hoped for a different outcome, but we must respect the prosecutor and police." He declined further comment on personnel matters.
