Sony revives Django/Zorro crossover with L.A. Confidential writer

Sony Pictures has tapped Oscar-winning screenwriter Brian Helgeland to write an untitled crossover film featuring Django from Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained and the masked vigilante Zorro. The project, based on a 2014 comic series co-written by Tarantino and Matt Wagner, centers on a new story of their unlikely alliance. It remains in early development with no director attached.

Brian Helgeland, who won an Oscar for L.A. Confidential, will pen the script for the film at Sony Pictures. The story follows Django, the bounty hunter portrayed by Jamie Foxx in the 2012 revisionist Western Django Unchained, teaming up with Zorro, played by Anthony Hopkins in 1998's The Mask of Zorro and Antonio Banderas in 2005's The Legend of Zorro. Plot details are not yet available, and neither Foxx nor Banderas has committed to the project, though Banderas previously confirmed Tarantino's interest in him for the role. Tarantino has discussed the Django-Zorro concept for years and co-wrote the source comic with Matt Wagner, but he will not direct. Earlier, he approached comedian Jerrod Carmichael for a script draft, which was later shelved. Carmichael described it in a 2022 GQ interview as 'an incredible, incredible script' that he hoped Sony would pursue despite its challenges. Banderas recounted a 2020 encounter with Tarantino at an Oscars party, saying, 'In your hands? Yeah, man!' He praised Tarantino's ability to elevate B-movie material into something compelling. The project marks a revival after previous efforts stalled, with Sony now moving forward in early stages.
