Swedish air purifiers emit harmful ozone

An inspection shows that several air purifiers sold in Sweden emit excessive levels of the toxic gas ozone. Elsäkerhetsverket and Kemikalieinspektionen tested 20 models, with four exceeding safety limits. Most of the purifiers had some form of deficiency.

A joint inspection by Elsäkerhetsverket and Kemikalieinspektionen has uncovered serious flaws in air purifiers sold in Sweden. Out of 20 models examined, four emit ozone levels above the permitted limits, accounting for 20 percent. "That 20 percent of the inspected air purifiers emitted excessive levels is serious," says Kerstin Gustafsson, inspector at Kemikalieinspektionen, in a press release.

In addition to ozone emissions, deficiencies were found in electrical safety, chemical content, and documentation. Most of the tested purifiers had some issue, and the review confirms that low-price products imported from non-EU countries are more prone to problems.

Ozone is a toxic gas that can irritate airways and eyes, cause coughing and breathing difficulties, and exacerbate asthma. The authorities emphasize the importance of consumers being aware of these risks when purchasing air purifiers to improve indoor air quality.

A Stanford University–led study published December 2 in PNAS Nexus finds that gas and propane stoves expose millions of Americans to substantial indoor nitrogen dioxide levels, in many cases matching or exceeding outdoor pollution. According to the research, replacing gas with electric stoves could cut average nitrogen dioxide exposure nationwide by more than one quarter, with particularly large benefits for people in smaller homes, renters, and rural households.

Common air pollutants like ozone alter the chemical scents that ants use to identify colony members, causing them to attack their own nest-mates as intruders. Researchers in Germany exposed ants to realistic levels of ozone and observed aggressive responses upon their return to the colony. This discovery highlights hidden ecological costs of pollution beyond human health.

CNET has released results from comprehensive lab tests on 12 new air purifiers, identifying five top performers for various needs. The evaluations focused on particle removal speed, noise levels, and energy efficiency, with awards for standout models in filtering performance. These findings come amid growing interest in indoor air quality amid seasonal allergies and pollutants.

Following a brief mid-week respite, Delhi's AQI surged to 387 on Saturday, nearing 'severe' levels as documented in our ongoing coverage of the winter pollution crisis. Thick smog reduced visibility, affecting 18 areas above 400, including hotspots like Wazirpur and Jahangirpuri, and prompting airport advisories.

Delhi and the NCR region marked the 13th consecutive day of hazardous air on November 26, 2025, with the city's AQI recorded between 337 and 373, categorized as very poor to severe. Particulate matter levels dipped slightly but stayed well above WHO limits, amid forecasts of no rain to clear the smog. NCR cities like Noida and Gurugram also reported high pollution indices.

Texas is expanding its petrochemical industry with dozens of new facilities and upgrades, despite warnings from experts about increased air pollution and health risks. The state, already a major emitter of toxic pollutants, plans projects that could release millions of pounds of carcinogens and contribute to ozone and particulate matter problems. Communities in Jefferson and Harris counties, including majority-minority neighborhoods, face heightened dangers from cancer and respiratory illnesses.
