Swedish air purifiers emit harmful ozone

An inspection shows that several air purifiers sold in Sweden emit excessive levels of the toxic gas ozone. Elsäkerhetsverket and Kemikalieinspektionen tested 20 models, with four exceeding safety limits. Most of the purifiers had some form of deficiency.

A joint inspection by Elsäkerhetsverket and Kemikalieinspektionen has uncovered serious flaws in air purifiers sold in Sweden. Out of 20 models examined, four emit ozone levels above the permitted limits, accounting for 20 percent. "That 20 percent of the inspected air purifiers emitted excessive levels is serious," says Kerstin Gustafsson, inspector at Kemikalieinspektionen, in a press release.

In addition to ozone emissions, deficiencies were found in electrical safety, chemical content, and documentation. Most of the tested purifiers had some issue, and the review confirms that low-price products imported from non-EU countries are more prone to problems.

Ozone is a toxic gas that can irritate airways and eyes, cause coughing and breathing difficulties, and exacerbate asthma. The authorities emphasize the importance of consumers being aware of these risks when purchasing air purifiers to improve indoor air quality.

Following days of summer heat, high birch pollen levels are warned for half the country in the coming days. The forecast runs until Monday with high risk in Götaland, Svealand, and parts of Norrland. Around three million Swedes suffer from pollen allergy.

Nearly one in 10 homes tested in the UK, Italy and the Netherlands showed benzene levels from gas cooker leaks that surpass safety limits, according to researchers. The cancer-causing chemical in natural gas poses risks akin to secondhand smoke indoors. The findings highlight potential indoor air pollution from slow leaks.

The American Lung Association's latest report reveals that 33.5 million US children, or 46 percent under age 18, live in areas failing at least one air pollution measure. An additional 7 million children reside in communities failing all three key metrics. The findings, based on 2022-2024 data, highlight worsening conditions amid environmental rollbacks.

A study published in *Nature Health* reports a statistical link between environmental exposure to mixtures of agricultural pesticides and higher cancer risk in Peru. Using modeled pesticide dispersion from 2014 to 2019 and cancer registry data from 2007 to 2020 covering more than 150,000 cases, researchers found that people living in high-exposure areas faced, on average, about a 150% higher likelihood of cancer, with Indigenous and rural farming communities among those most exposed.
