Svenske luftrensere avgir skadelig ozon

The Comisión Ambiental de la Megalópolis (CAMe) has decided to maintain Phase I ozone air contingency in the Mexico City Metropolitan Area on Saturday, February 14, 2026, marking the third day of vehicle restrictions due to poor air quality. The peak ozone level recorded was 156 ppb at the Atizapán station in the State of Mexico. Authorities attribute the situation to a high-pressure system that promotes pollutant accumulation.

Nearly one in 10 homes tested in the UK, Italy and the Netherlands showed benzene levels from gas cooker leaks that surpass safety limits, according to researchers. The cancer-causing chemical in natural gas poses risks akin to secondhand smoke indoors. The findings highlight potential indoor air pollution from slow leaks.

For the second time this year, a strong sulphur smell has affected Johannesburg, leading to health complaints from residents. The City of Johannesburg detected elevated levels of hydrogen sulphide and sulphur dioxide, likely originating from industrial activities in Mpumalanga's Highveld area. Questions persist about monitoring and enforcement against major polluters.

The Commission for the Megalopolis Environment (CAMe) reported that Phase 1 air quality contingency remains in effect this Friday, February 13, in the Metropolitan Zone of the Valley of Mexico due to poor air quality. Ozone buildup is expected with temperatures up to 27 degrees Celsius, keeping the Double No Drive program active. Authorities recommend avoiding outdoor activities between 1:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. to protect health.

Delhi's air quality index (AQI) surpassing 400 is causing severe health issues in previously healthy children. Paediatricians report increased hospitalizations due to pollution-induced respiratory and skin problems. Experts emphasize the need for protective measures during smoggy periods.

Delhi and the NCR region marked the 13th consecutive day of hazardous air on November 26, 2025, with the city's AQI recorded between 337 and 373, categorized as very poor to severe. Particulate matter levels dipped slightly but stayed well above WHO limits, amid forecasts of no rain to clear the smog. NCR cities like Noida and Gurugram also reported high pollution indices.

The Delhi High Court has intervened in a public interest litigation seeking a reduction in GST rates on air purifiers from 18 percent to 5 percent, questioning why they cannot be classified as medical devices. The court urged the GST Council to convene urgently to address the issue amid Delhi's severe air pollution crisis. However, the editorial argues that such decisions fall under the legislative domain of the GST Council, not the judiciary.
