The addition of Tarik Skubal to Team USA's roster marks a significant boost for the Americans ahead of the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Skubal, who went 13-6 with a 2.21 ERA and 241 strikeouts in 195 innings during the 2025 season, will pair with Paul Skenes of the Pittsburgh Pirates to form a formidable 1-2 punch of reigning Cy Young winners. This comes after Team USA's pitching struggled in the 2023 tournament, where they finished second to Japan despite a strong overall performance.
Recruitment for Skubal began subtly last spring, with Team USA manager Mark DeRosa reaching out in April via occasional texts to respect the pitcher's focus on the MLB season. "I think I called Tarik in April," DeRosa said. "I've been very respectful to the season." General manager Michael Hill emphasized the honor of representing the country during conversations at the MLB Awards in Vegas and Winter Meetings. "We've been honest that it's an honor to put the red, white and blue across your chest," Hill noted.
Skubal's journey to this point is unique; unlike many stars, he lacked early international exposure, having only one Division I college offer from Seattle University. His Tigers teammate Riley Greene, by contrast, won gold at the 2018 COPABE U18 Pan-American Championships. Now, Skubal joins a stacked pitching staff including Logan Webb (San Francisco Giants, 15-11, 3.22 ERA in 2025), Mason Miller (San Diego Padres, 2.63 ERA), David Bednar (New York Yankees), Joe Ryan (Minnesota Twins), Clay Holmes and Nolan McLean (New York Mets), Matthew Boyd (Chicago Cubs), and Garrett Whitlock (Boston Red Sox).
Team USA's Pool B opens on March 6, 2026, against Brazil at 8 p.m. ET in Houston's Daikin Park, followed by games against Mexico, Great Britain, and Italy. The tournament runs March 5-17 across Houston, Miami, Tokyo, and San Juan. With captain Aaron Judge leading a lineup featuring Bobby Witt Jr., Cal Raleigh, and others, the U.S. aims to reclaim the title won in 2017 under Jim Leyland. Former Tigers manager Leyland highlighted the challenges: "That's the tricky thing about handling that team, because you have to know how to handle your pitching."
Skubal's participation aligns with his Spring Training in Lakeland, Florida, thanks to flexible WBC scheduling for pitchers. Tigers manager A.J. Hinch, who played for Team USA in the 1996 Olympics, supports the integration. While intensity will rise beyond Grapefruit League games, the stint promises lifelong memories without derailing Skubal's contract year.
