Texas man gets 30 years for fatally stabbing his mother

Brian Keith Griffin pleaded guilty to murdering his mother and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The 37-year-old stabbed 55-year-old Tammy Bogue multiple times in their Marshall apartment last November. Griffin called 911 on himself after the attack.

On Thursday, Brian Keith Griffin, 37, entered a guilty plea to one count of murder in Harrison County court. Judge Brad Morin of the 71st Judicial District handed down a 30-year prison sentence for the November 27, 2024, stabbing death of his mother, Tammy Bogue, 55. The incident took place at their apartment on Norwood Street in Marshall, a city in far East Texas about 40 miles west of Shreveport, Louisiana. Griffin called 911 just before 12:45 p.m., reporting the stabbing, according to court records and Marshall Police Department statements. Officers found Bogue on the floor with multiple knife wounds; she was pronounced dead at the scene. In a custodial interview, Griffin admitted stabbing her multiple times with the intent to kill, police noted in a probable cause statement. During sentencing, Griffin mentioned prior treatment for mental illness, including a suicide attempt, but stated he was not insane at the time. His defense attorney confirmed his competency to stand trial. Harrison County District Attorney Reid McCain described a potential trial as a 'battle of the experts,' with Griffin facing up to 99 years. The plea deal, agreed upon by Griffin, the state, and surviving family members, settled on the 30-year term. McCain praised the family's cooperation, saying they loved Griffin but believed he needed accountability. Bogue's sister rejected claims tied to mental health, calling the act a 'betrayal of trust.' She referenced Griffin's words to investigators, 'She had to go,' and told him, 'Now you have to go.'
