A man and a woman were confirmed dead after their house collapsed in Ashikaga, Tochigi Prefecture, during heavy rains. The local city announced the deaths on Sunday.
The two-story house collapsed Friday night after mud from a nearby mountain flowed into the first floor amid torrential rains. Authorities recovered the woman's body Saturday afternoon and the man's body Sunday night.
The residents were a couple in their 60s. Fire and rescue teams had been unable to reach them earlier. Ashikaga recorded 232.5 millimeters of rain in 12 hours through 2:20 a.m. Saturday, marking an unprecedented amount for the area.
