Two men were found in the water in Oxelösund's archipelago after a major rescue operation on Christmas evening. They had set out in a fishing boat in the morning and were reported missing by relatives. The men were taken care of by ambulance, but their condition is unknown.
On Christmas morning around 9 a.m., two men left Oxelösund in a small fishing boat, a trawler about 12 meters long. Relatives grew worried in the evening and alerted SOS Alarm at 8:45 p.m. The Sea and Air Rescue Center at the Swedish Maritime Administration immediately launched a major search operation in the waters south of Oxelösund.
The search involved a helicopter and a pilot boat from the Swedish Maritime Administration, two vessels from the Coast Guard, and two boats from the Swedish Sea Rescue Society in Trosa and Oxelösund. Divers and police also participated. At 10:45 p.m., the men were found in the water, despite fine weather and good visibility.
"The alarm came at 8:45 p.m., it was worried relatives who alerted us. At 10:45 p.m., we found the two missing men in the water," says Johan Wahlström, press spokesperson for the Swedish Maritime Administration. It is unclear how long they had been in the cold water or how the incident occurred. The men were brought ashore and taken care of by ambulance, but their injury status is unknown.
The rescue operation highlighted the effectiveness of Sweden's maritime rescue system, even during holidays.
