Uber Eats introduces AI Cart Assistant for easier grocery shopping

Uber has launched a new AI-powered feature called Cart Assistant in its Eats app to simplify grocery shopping. The tool allows users to build their baskets by typing lists or uploading photos, automatically adding items while considering availability and prices. Currently in beta, it builds on recent AI enhancements to the platform.

Uber is expanding its use of artificial intelligence in the Uber Eats app with the introduction of Cart Assistant, aimed at streamlining the grocery shopping process. The feature enables users to "build grocery baskets faster and with less effort" by leveraging AI to populate carts based on provided shopping lists.

To access Cart Assistant, users search for a supported grocery store from the app's home screen and tap the dedicated icon at the top. They can input their needs by typing a list manually or uploading a photo of a handwritten one; even screenshots of recipe ingredients are accepted. The AI then selects matching items, taking into account stock availability, and displays prices along with any promotions.

Users have flexibility to remove unwanted suggestions, swap items, or add forgotten ones later. The system prioritizes products from past purchases to minimize adjustments. Uber notes that Cart Assistant is in beta, so performance may vary.

This rollout follows other AI integrations added last summer, such as enhanced food images, menu descriptions generated by AI, and summaries of restaurant reviews. The feature targets the routine task of grocery shopping, where AI assistance could prove particularly useful.
