United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has honoured Nelson Mandela in a video statement for Mandela International Day. He described the late South African leader as a champion of peace, justice and equality.
Guterres said Mandela reminded the world that ending poverty is an act of justice rather than charity. He called for investment in decent work, universal health coverage, quality education and social protection systems.
The Secretary-General also urged reform of the international financial architecture to provide developing countries with needed funds and debt relief. He stressed the importance of economies rooted in renewable energy.
“I’ve always been inspired by Madiba’s life and belief that when people stand together, nothing is impossible,” Guterres said. “The future is in our hands today and every day.”
