Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva backed Michelle Bachelet's candidacy for UN Secretary General after meeting her in Brasilia.
Lula and Bachelet met for nearly an hour on Monday at the Planalto Palace. The Brazilian leader highlighted her experience as head of state and within the UN, stating it qualifies her to be the first Latin American woman to lead the organization.
They discussed the role of a reformed UN in promoting peace, sustainable development and multilateralism. Bachelet presented her candidacy to the General Assembly on April 21 for three hours.
Chile withdrew its official support under President José Antonio Kast, but Brazil and Mexico maintain their backing. Other candidates include Rafael Grossi, Rebeca Grynspan and Macky Sall.
Lula has reiterated that Bachelet has the most outstanding resume for the post, given her two terms as Chile's president and senior UN roles.
