So won the first classical game with black on March 11 and drew the second with white after 33 moves on March 12, opting for simplification in a Giuoco Piano opening to secure the result.
So's path to the title was steady. He defeated Ray Robson, Sam Sevian, and Fabiano Caruana, all by 2.5-1.5 scores in the championship bracket. Matches against Robson and Sevian featured two classical draws each, resolved in So's favor during blitz tiebreakers. Against Caruana, So lost the first classical game but won the second to force blitz, prevailing in the three-minute games.
This victory marks So's first American Cup title after participating in all five editions. He finished as runner-up in 2023 to Hikaru Nakamura and in 2024 to Aronian. So lost only one game across 14 in the tournament and earned $75,000 plus a $15,000 bonus. Ranked world number nine, So has not qualified for the FIDE Candidates since his 2018 debut and recently noted exclusions from certain invite-only events.

Nakamura skipped the event to prepare for the Candidates, where he faces Caruana in the opening round on March 29 in Cyprus. FIDE announced Peter Svidler and Jan Gustafsson as commentators.
In the women's section, Carissa Yip forced a grand final reset against Alice Lee after drawing classical games and winning tiebreaks, including an Armageddon. The decider is set for March 13 in a two-game rapid match.
