A7 and Elbtunnel in Hamburg reopen ahead of schedule

The full closure of the A7 motorway and Elbtunnel in Hamburg has been lifted earlier than planned. The Autobahngesellschaft announced this on Sunday evening. Only the on- and off-ramp at Hamburg-Bahrenfeld northbound remains closed until 5am Monday.

The A7 between Hamburg-Stellingen and -Heimfeld has been fully closed in both directions since Friday evening at 10pm. It was originally set to reopen Monday morning. During the closure, noise protection tunnels in Schnelsen and Stellingen were integrated into the Othmarschen tunnel control centre and a software update was installed, according to Autobahngesellschaft Nord. All works are now complete.

The closure caused detours and delays, especially Saturday on the A1 between Billstedt and Stillhorn as well as in the city centre. The Verkehrsleitzentrale reported that congestion did not exceed forecasts. Two demonstrations further strained inner-city traffic. Sunday also saw delays on diversion routes.

Deges and Autobahngesellschaft announced five more full closures of the A7 in Hamburg for 2026. In late June, the Elbtunnel will remain open while the Schnelsen noise tunnel is closed. The road has been closed two weekends since the start of the year, in February and March.

The section between Heimfeld and Dreieck Hamburg Nordwest is being widened to eight lanes. Construction south of the Elbtunnel is due complete by autumn 2026, and the Altona noise protection tunnel by the end of 2029.

Five people were taken to hospital after a major pile-up on the E22 in Blekinge near Sölvesborg on Monday. Strong winds blew sand that suddenly reduced visibility for drivers, according to witnesses. The road was closed in both directions for several hours.

Traffic on E22 was closed late Friday evening between Kronetorp and Lund Norra to lift the first of two new green pedestrian and cycle bridges into place over the motorway in Lund. Work was delayed by darkness and cold but the bridge was in position by 22:00. Lund residents must wait until the end of June to use it.
