Chennai hospital removes foreign body from Mauritius woman's neck

Doctors at MIOT International in Chennai successfully extracted a sharp object that had migrated into the neck of a 46-year-old Mauritius woman. The patient had initially choked on a burger on April 24 and sought treatment after pain persisted.

The woman, a schoolteacher, experienced throat discomfort after eating the meal. She drank water and rested but later consulted doctors in Mauritius. An endoscopic evaluation four days later showed the object had moved beyond the food pipe, leading to a referral for treatment in India.

She arrived in Chennai on May 2. A CT scan revealed the foreign body had pierced the right side of her thyroid region and lay close to major arteries. Surgeons used intraoperative CT imaging to locate it precisely and removed the 24-millimetre object through a small neck incision.

The patient recovered in intensive care and resumed a normal diet after initial tube feeding. Mallika Mohandas, chairman of MIOT International, credited timely intervention and advanced technology for the outcome. Doctors noted that limited international flights continue to hinder medical tourism to India.
