Construction starts on kidney treatment center in Dessie

Construction has begun on a kidney treatment center at Dessie General Specialized Hospital. The project uses funds collected from the public and aims to reduce patient referrals to Addis Ababa.

Construction on a kidney treatment center at Dessie General Specialized Hospital began on February 15, 2026.

Wollo University President Dr. Awel Seid stated that the project started with funds originally collected for the Wollo Tertiary Care Hospital. By decision of the House of Peoples' Representatives, 95 million Birr raised from the public has been allocated for community benefit through this hospital construction.

The construction will incorporate an additional 187 million Birr and is planned to accelerate to begin work within three months. The center is designed to serve 34 patients simultaneously.

Hospital administrator Dr. Haymanot Ayele explained that without such a facility, patients had to be referred to Addis Ababa, resulting in high costs and delays. Wollo University officials expressed satisfaction over initiating this improved kidney medical center.
