Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister Kamel Al-Wazir oversaw the signing of major cooperation agreements with Djibouti during an official visit, focusing on maritime transport, logistics zones, and green energy. The deals aim to strengthen bilateral ties and support Djibouti's infrastructure development with Egyptian expertise. This follows President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi's visit in April 2025.
During his official visit to Djibouti, Egypt's Deputy Prime Minister for Industrial Development and Minister of Industry and Transport, Kamel Al-Wazir, toured the headquarters of the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority (DPFZA). He was accompanied by Djibouti's Minister of Infrastructure and Equipment, Hassan Hamad Ibrahim; DPFZA Chairman Aboubaker Omar Hadi; Egypt's Ambassador to Djibouti, Abdelrahman Raafat; and President of the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport, Ismail Abdel Ghaffar, along with senior officials and executives from seven Egyptian companies.
The visit included a presentation on DPFZA's mandate, key projects, and strategic initiatives, followed by discussions on cooperation opportunities. Djibouti sought Egyptian expertise in renewable energy projects like solar and wind power, as well as infrastructure, road construction, maintenance, and port development. Egyptian firms expressed readiness to contribute to these initiatives at international standards.
Al-Wazir highlighted the strong historical ties between Egypt and Djibouti, emphasizing Egypt's commitment to advancing outcomes from President Al-Sisi's April 2025 visit. Notable results included the November 2025 inauguration of Banque Misr Djibouti and the opening of a solar power station in Omar Kaga village in the Arta region.
Talks also covered a prior memorandum of understanding between Egypt's Holding Company for Maritime and Land Transport and DPFZA, facilitating investments in the National Road RN18 development, renewable energy, a wind farm feasibility study in the International Free Zone, and port expansions.
Field visits followed to the Doraleh Container Terminal, a planned solar power station site, and a proposed logistics zone. At the visit's end, Al-Wazir and Minister Ibrahim witnessed the signing of three agreements: one for a multi-purpose terminal project involving an Egyptian consortium with the Holding Company and Great Horn Investment Holding; another for a regional logistics hub with the Holding Company, Elsewedy Group, and DPFZA; and terms for the Green Port Solar Project between Elsewedy Electric and the Doraleh Container Terminal operator.
The Green Port Solar Project seeks to ensure sustainable operations at the Doraleh port by providing clean energy and reducing reliance on volatile global fuel prices. These pacts reinforce Egypt's role in regional infrastructure and Djibouti's status as a trade gateway in the Horn of Africa.
