Egypt launches initiative to support children with type 1 diabetes

Egypt has launched a presidential initiative to support children with type 1 diabetes as part of its 100 Million Healthy Lives programme, using continuous glucose monitoring technology.

Health Minister Khaled Abdel Ghaffar said around 55,000 children in Egypt from birth to age 18 live with type 1 diabetes.

The initiative provides continuous glucose monitoring devices that eliminate more than 3,650 finger-prick tests per child each year.

So far 143 children have enrolled, with early results showing emergency room visits fell from 1.11 to 0.08 per child per year.

The programme is expected to expand gradually to eight specialised centres across Egypt by the end of 2027.
