A federal judge in Puente Grande ordered the Fiscalía General de la República on Monday to reopen investigation file 34/2026 into Nassón Joaquín García, leader of La Luz del Mundo. The ruling revokes the prosecutor's no-action decision from last December. García is serving a sentence in the United States for sexual abuse of minors.
Judge Juan José Rodríguez Velarde, based at the federal courts in Puente Grande, ruled that the FGR cannot close the case against Nassón Joaquín García. The order requires reopening the probe for offenses similar to those for which García pleaded guilty in 2022 in California, receiving 16 years and 8 months in prison for three counts of sexual abuse of minors.
García avoided trial on 19 charges, including sexual assault of minors, possession of child pornography, and human trafficking. Victims Sochil Martín and Sharim Guzmán sought the revocation, deeming Mexico's prior closure inexplicable. “They call it Mexico's 'Epstein problem' here. We've tried to inform as much as possible about the crimes, and it seems like what we're seeing in the United States will never happen (in the country),” Martín said in a recent interview.
Martín and Guzmán claim the complaints would expose a network of money laundering, human trafficking, sexual exploitation, and child pornography. On April 17, the Secretaría de Gobernación stated that La Luz del Mundo's registration as a religious association remains valid but suspended García's rights as a minister of worship.
