Global Fund mobilises over R190 billion to fight HIV, TB and malaria

The 8th Global Fund Replenishment Summit has secured more than R190 billion to tackle HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria worldwide. The event took place alongside the G20 Summit in Johannesburg's Nasrec. South Africa's Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi highlighted the partnership's impact in saving millions of lives.

The 8th Global Fund Replenishment Summit, held on the sidelines of the G20 Summit at Nasrec in Johannesburg, announced the mobilization of over R190 billion aimed at combating HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria, with a focus on high-burden countries.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi emphasized the Global Fund's achievements since its inception in 2002. He noted that the partnership has saved 70 million lives and reduced the combined death rate from these three diseases by 63%.

National Health Department spokesperson Foster Mohale relayed the minister's commendations for the donors. “Minister Motsoaledi commends the unwavering dedication of donor countries, private sector and philanthropic organisations that espoused the virtues of multilateralism through the replenishment campaign," Mohale stated. The minister stressed the need for multi-sectoral collaboration, urging “governments, civil society, private sector, and communities” to unite, as “our fates are intertwined.”

This replenishment underscores ongoing global health efforts, particularly in regions like sub-Saharan Africa where these diseases remain prevalent. South Africa's government and business sector also pledged $36.6 million to support the Global Fund, reinforcing national commitment to international health initiatives.
