Law minister explains police retirement age change in bill

Law Minister Supratman Andi Agtas said the change in police retirement age was included in the police bill to align with rules for civil servants, the military and prosecutors.

Supratman Andi Agtas made the statement after a meeting at the parliament complex in Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday. He explained that civil servants now retire at ages 58 to 60, while functional staff can reach 65. The military and prosecutor's laws have also been revised to 60 years.

The law minister stressed that the adjustment was based on fairness and rising life expectancy. He believes the step will produce higher-quality law enforcement personnel.

Supratman dismissed concerns that the retirement age change would extend the term of the national police chief. The top police post is entirely at the president's discretion, he said.

House Commission III chairman Habiburokhman added that retirement age rules would be adjusted to organizational needs in a more measurable way. The government recommended that parliament discuss the adjustment as part of professional human resource development.
