MHA issues fresh extension for Manipur violence probe panel until November 2026

The Union Ministry of Home Affairs has extended the deadline for a Commission of Inquiry into the 2023 Manipur violence until November 20, 2026. The three-member panel must now submit its report on the ethnic clashes as soon as possible but no later than that date.

The ministry issued a fresh gazette notification on Thursday granting the extension. The panel was set up on June 4, 2023, shortly after violence erupted on May 3 that year. The clashes have claimed more than 250 lives.

This marks the sixth extension for the commission. Its previous deadlines were set for September 13, December 3, May 20, December 16, and May 20, 2026. The panel had been given until November 20, 2025, in the four prior extensions.

Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan, a former Supreme Court judge, now chairs the panel following the February resignation of Justice Ajay Lamba. The other members are retired IAS officer Himanshu Sekhar Das and retired IPS officer Aloka Prabhakar.
