Inquiry panel probing allegations against justice varma submits report to speaker

The Judges Inquiry Committee investigating allegations against Justice Yashwant Varma submitted its report to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla on Monday. The report follows statutory requirements under the Judges (Inquiry) Act, 1968.

The report will be laid before both Houses of Parliament and is expected to be taken up during the Monsoon Session between July and August.

Justice Varma of the Allahabad High Court resigned last month amid impeachment proceedings. These proceedings stemmed from the alleged discovery of burnt currency notes at his Delhi residence after a fire in March 2025.

An earlier in-house committee had found that Justice Varma had active or tacit control over the storeroom where the cash was located. Over 200 MPs had signed an impeachment motion in July 2025.

The three-member Inquiry Committee, set up on August 12, 2025, included Justice Aravind Kumar, Bombay High Court Chief Justice Shree Chandrashekhar and Senior Advocate B V Acharya.
