Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro has urged the National Assembly to amend laws and cut taxes to bring down fuel prices. His proposals follow recent sharp increases announced by EPRA.
Nyoro made the announcement during a press briefing in Nairobi on Friday, May 15. He said he had written to the National Assembly seeking to abolish the Ksh7 Road Maintenance Levy introduced in 2024. He also called for a further 5 per cent reduction in VAT on fuel and the release of Ksh5 billion from the Fuel Stabilisation Fund.
According to Nyoro, these measures would lower the price of super petrol by about Ksh27 per litre to Ksh187.25. Diesel would drop to around Ksh215.92. The current prices stand at Ksh214.25 for super petrol and Ksh242.92 for diesel after the latest EPRA review.
Nyoro further alleged that government-to-government fuel importation deals benefit senior officials and should be abolished. The proposals come as matatu operators prepare to raise fares by 50 per cent and stage a nationwide strike on Monday.
