On Monday, the second accused in the Marikana mass shooting appeared before the Athlone Magistrate’s Court. The incident occurred on 17 January at a tavern in the Marikana informal settlement in Philippi, where nine people were killed and one was critically injured.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Eric Ntabazalila stated that the accused faces nine charges of murder, two counts of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and attempted murder. The case was postponed to 2 March for bail information.

The co-accused has already abandoned his bail application and is scheduled to return to court in April. The shooting drew widespread condemnation following the event.
