U.N. committee adopts South Korea-led resolutions on AI and youth disarmament

A U.N. committee has adopted two South Korea-led resolutions on the military use of artificial intelligence and promoting disarmament among youth. The resolutions were passed during a meeting in New York on Thursday local time. They will be submitted to the U.N. General Assembly plenary session in December for final adoption.

The U.N. General Assembly First Committee, which deals with disarmament and international security, adopted the two South Korea-led resolutions during a meeting in New York on Thursday local time. The foreign ministry announced the development in a release on Friday.

The resolution on AI in the military domain, co-led by the Netherlands and adopted for the second straight year, calls for global efforts to ensure that relevant international law is applied to military uses of AI, to minimize its risks, and to reaffirm the importance of a multistakeholder approach to such uses.

The resolution on youth, disarmament and nonproliferation calls for encouraging youth participation in related discussions and fostering education and capacity building on those issues, among other efforts.

The resolutions adopted by the committee will be submitted to the U.N. General Assembly plenary session in December for final adoption. This move underscores South Korea's role in promoting responsible AI governance in military contexts and engaging younger generations in global peace initiatives.
