Bomet Governor sentenced to one month in jail for contempt

A Nakuru court has sentenced Bomet Governor Hillary Barchok and 10 other county officials to one month in prison for contempt of court.

The sentence was handed down on Thursday, June 18, after the officials failed to reinstate workers whose contracts were terminated unlawfully. The Employment and Labour Relations Court directed the Bomet County Government to reinstate the employees in March.

The court ordered the 11 officials to serve their term at Nakuru GK Prison until they comply with the reinstatement directive. Governor Barchok was not arrested and continued with official duties including road project inspections.

He had announced plans to contest the Bomet County Senator seat under the United Democratic Alliance in the 2027 elections. The governor previously faced graft charges in 2025.
