Chennai sees cloudy skies and cooler temperatures on Saturday

Chennai experienced cloudy weather on Saturday due to a low-level circulation over the Bay of Bengal, resulting in cooler temperatures and strong onshore winds.

The Nungambakkam station recorded 32.3 degrees Celsius, below the normal of 38.2 degrees Celsius. Meenambakkam registered 32.4 degrees Celsius against a normal of 39.1 degrees Celsius.

V.R. Durai, Director of the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre, explained that the early strengthening of the sea-breeze circulation brought moist northeasterly winds of 25–30 km/hr from the Bay of Bengal starting at 8 a.m. This moisture, combined with low-level convergence, supported widespread cloud formation.

At Marina Beach, residents reported a small sandstorm in the morning. K. Bharathi, a local resident, said the wind whipped up the sands, prompting police to clear morning walkers. Two boats returning from sea were overturned, though no one was injured.

Sunday is expected to remain cloudy across Chennai and surrounding areas, with heavy rain, thunderstorms, and gusty winds up to 40-50 kmph possible at isolated places in several districts including Nilgiris, Coimbatore, and Madurai.
