Consumer debt delinquency reaches highest level in 16 years

Argentine families face growing difficulties paying consumer debts, which reached delinquency rates at their highest in 16 years based on May data.

Eugenia Muzzio, economy specialist journalist from Grupo Perfil, stated that delinquency indices have quadrupled compared to the same period last year and reached 12.7% in May, according to consultant 1816.

The issue focuses on personal loans at 14.9% delinquency, credit cards at 12.5%, and fintech reaching 20% to 25%, while mortgage loans remain at just 1.5%.

Muzzio explained that debts mainly arise from everyday expenses and that high interest rates, up to 400% and 500% in fintech, complicate payments without relief from inflation or refinancing.

Projections indicate the situation will persist through the rest of the year and possibly into 2027.
