Early Mareld season observed along the west coast

Mareld has appeared unusually early this year along the Bohus coast. Reports of orange algal blooms have come in from several locations.

Between Mollösund and Grundsund, the County Administrative Board of Västra Götaland has received several reports of thick algal blooms during the weekend. The water outside Orust and Skaftö has turned orange.

Andreas Ljung, marine biologist at the Kristineberg Marine Research Station in Fiskebäckskil, examined the phenomenon himself. He filled a bowl with seawater and tested it in a dark room.

– It is so incredibly cool! Truly magical!, he says.

The water was red the day before the test but has since moved with the currents. Ljung compares the season to the one that occurred in 2024.
