EPRA warns against cutting trees near power lines

The Energy Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has warned Kenyans against cutting trees near power lines due to safety risks. The alert follows ongoing vandalism of energy infrastructure. EPRA advises contacting Kenya Power for safe tree removal.

EPRA issued the warning via its social media platforms on May 5, 2026. “Avoid cutting trees near power lines; this could result in electrocution, outages & damage,” EPRA stated. Risks include electrocution, power outages and structural damage.

The authority outlined steps for safe tree removal near power lines. Contact the nearest Kenya Power office, dial *977# or call 0709 336 000 for professional help. A team of experts assesses the site and uses specialized techniques like directional pruning.

By law, a five-meter-wide corridor on either side of power lines must remain clear, which Kenya Power enforces. The Energy Act 2019 defines an "act of vandalism" as any wilful, negligent, reckless or malicious act damaging energy apparatus.

Penalties include a fine of at least Ksh5 million, 10-year prison term or both. For economic sabotage, fines reach Ksh1 billion or 15 years in prison.
