Jakarta – The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) is confident that implementing face recording or face recognition in the mobile customer registration process will benefit the public. According to Indonesia ICT Institute Executive Director Heru Sutadi, this practice can protect personal data security and reduce the risk of rampant digital crimes.
“The biggest beneficiaries are the public. Currently, we don't know if our personal data is being used by others,” said Heru Sutadi on Sunday, November 30, 2025.
If implemented, this policy could lower digital crime rates because customer data can only be accessed by its legitimate owner. Other users cannot access information without permission. “Others won't be able to. We don't know if our personal data has leaked or not. There might be other parties using our data,” he continued.
This policy aligns with the trend of face recognition use in smartphones for various applications, such as transportation and digital finance. The registration process is simple: just KTP, Family Card, and face recording. If the data is valid, verification is immediately confirmed by matching biometrics with the identity on the KTP and Population Registration Number (NIK).
Heru Sutadi has conducted a trial at one of the cellular operator stores. “We conducted a trial at one of the cellular operator stores. The process was quick and easy,” he revealed.
However, he hopes the supporting ecosystem is ready to avoid errors and deviations from regulations. “Before widespread implementation, limited trials need to be conducted to identify obstacles, as well as evaluations for improvements,” he said. Additionally, face recording data is hoped to be deleted after verification is complete to avoid storage without clarity.
