Fallout 76 developers discuss Infestations update challenge

Developers of Fallout 76 have shared insights into the new Infestations update, which launched on June 2. The team expressed surprise at how quickly players cleared the added challenges.

Fallout 76 creative director Jon Rush and production director Bill LaCoste spoke about the update during Summer Game Fest last week. They noted that internal playtesting suggested the infestations would prove difficult, yet players advanced faster than expected.

"We were playtesting [Infestations] exhaustively, and we thought, ‘we’re pretty good, these seem pretty hard, I bet our players are going to have a hard time with this,'" LaCoste said. The update introduces powerful enemy spawns at around 40 locations across the map, with rewards including high-level legendary items.

The feature allows real-time adjustments to enemy types and locations. Rush and LaCoste highlighted how this supports ongoing tweaks based on player progress. Both developers said they have more than 1,000 hours in the game themselves.

Infestations marks the 27th major update for the title, which has received 68 updates in total since launch.
