Florida Panthers sign Akira Schmid to two-year contract

The Florida Panthers have agreed to terms with goaltender Akira Schmid on a two-year deal worth four million dollars.

The signing, confirmed on July 25, ends arbitration proceedings between the parties. Schmid, 26, was acquired earlier from the Vegas Golden Knights in exchange for a 2028 third-round draft pick.

The Swiss netminder posted a 16-10-6 record with two shutouts in 34 appearances for Vegas during the 2025-26 season. He has appeared in 82 career NHL games across stints with the New Jersey Devils and Golden Knights, and represented Switzerland at the Olympics earlier this year.

Jacob Markström, acquired from the New Jersey Devils after Sergei Bobrovsky departed for the Toronto Maple Leafs, is expected to share duties with Schmid. The 36-year-old Swede is ten years older than his new teammate.

The contract carries an annual cap hit of two million dollars over the next two seasons.
