Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has intensified immigration detention operations. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents carried out 16,213 arrests between July 1 and 11, exceeding June's daily average.
Three recent deaths are linked to these operations. Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a Mexican from Guanajuato, was shot on July 7 in Houston. Joan Sebastian Duran Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian, died in Maine. Juan Jairo Coronilla Durán, 28 and holding a tourist visa, was struck by a truck on July 14 in Florida while fleeing.
Mullin defended the actions in an X post, emphasizing agent safety. Critics such as David Bier of the Cato Institute noted the approach is more dispersed but similar to prior operations that sparked protests.
