K-pop star IU has faced multiple setbacks this year, culminating in the end of her four-year relationship with actor Lee Jong Suk. The pair's agencies confirmed the split on July 10 after dating publicly since late 2022.
According to a source close to the agency, IU and Lee Jong Suk chose to remain supportive colleagues following their recent breakup, with no further details released due to privacy concerns.
Earlier in 2026, IU starred in the MBC drama Perfect Crown, which drew backlash over alleged historical inaccuracies in scenes involving a coronation and ceremonial crown. IU issued a public apology on Instagram, expressing regret for not reviewing the details more carefully, and similar statements came from co-star Byeon Woo Seok, writer Yoo Ji Won, and director Park Joon Hwa.
In June, IU was targeted by political hate comments after netizens demanded she prepay supplies for protesters at a Jamsil vote-counting center, referencing her earlier support during the 2024 martial law crisis. She had no announced connection to the June events.
Fans have noted the string of challenges making 2026 especially difficult for the star, though half the year remains.
