Kochi eatery shut down after nearly 50 report food poisoning

Nearly 50 people fell ill after dining at Al-Reem in Kochi last week. Food safety officials closed the restaurant and suspended its licence.

The incident took place on July 10 at the Arabic restaurant on Thammanam–Pulleppady Road. Diners reported symptoms including fever, vomiting and dysentery the following day.

Complaints reached officials on Monday. Samples from the eatery were sent to a laboratory for testing. Kuzhi Manthi and Al Faham were among the dishes served.

Several affected individuals remain in hospitals across Kochi. The Food Safety department has recorded statements and expects additional complaints in the coming days.
