A US appeals court has warned that lawyers may face sanctions after submitting an appeal filled with fictitious quotations generated by artificial intelligence. The case involved an attempt to force Meta to remove a critical post from a dating safety group on Facebook.

Nikko D’Ambrosio appealed a district court ruling that dismissed his lawsuit against more than two dozen women and Meta. He had accused the women of defamation over posts in the Chicago Facebook group “Are We Dating the Same Guy” and claimed Meta promoted the content for profit. The US Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit rejected the appeal as frivolous and highlighted mistakes and fictitious quotations that showed signs of generative AI misuse.
